Lab test retailers and performing laboratories

Understand the difference between a test retailer and a performing laboratory, and why it matters.

Two roles in one purchase.

The website taking your order may be a retailer that sells access to tests performed by another organization. The performing laboratory processes the sample. A collection location is another detail to confirm; it is not necessarily the retailer’s office.

Why the distinction helps.

Different retailers can offer access to the same laboratory service with different prices, fees, and ordering arrangements. A laboratory’s name on two listings is useful information, but it does not by itself prove that both listings contain the same test.

What to confirm before booking.

  • The performing laboratory and the laboratory’s test code, when available.
  • The exact measurements and specimen described in the listing.
  • Where and how your sample will be collected.
  • Who provides the order or requisition, and what fees apply.
  • Who provides results and answers questions about your purchase.

Keep the right contact handy.

Questions about a retailer’s checkout, order status, or refund policy belong with that retailer. Questions about the suitability or interpretation of a test belong with a qualified clinician. RateMyLab can help you investigate a listing or report outdated pricing.
